OverviewThe Cold Lake First Nations Social Services Department is responsible for administering income support funding as provided by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) (see www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/index_e.html). Financial assistance is provided to individuals and families so that basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter may be met.
The department undertakes a needs assessment to determine eligibility for support. Two mains categories of applicant are recognized, those expected to work ( e.g. unemployed and looking for work, or individuals undergoing training/rehabilitation programs), and those not expected to work (e.g. due to a medical or mental health problem). Applicants are eligible for support provided they meet the criteria for each category. The department will assist with finding suitable employment for those able to work. Under the expert guidance of Director, Doreen Larson, this department provides the Members with living assistance in a dignified environment, counseling and life planning. Partnering with Human Resources, Post-Secondary Education and other CLFN Departments, Doreen and her team of Social Worker, Leanne Jacob and Receptionist, Carla Buckle have been successful in providing alternative programs and strong community projects. |
